Category Archives: First Marathon on Herbalife24

Attempting my first full marathon in December 2013. Herbalife24 was highly ranked by triathletes. That’s three activities … I just need one. This is my daily journey on the road and on the products. To the finish!

Day 96. Power Duo

Once a month, at least that’s what we shoot for, we get together. We is the “band.” The Uncle Georges named after my slightly older brother that this blog is dedicated to. His insight is deeply missed and for those who didn’t know him, this conversation should give you a sense of his sensibility.

Me, “Dude, I signed up for a marathon.

Him, “Why would you pay to run? That’s stupid. I can just go outside and run for free.

Oh how I miss him. Dude was a genius and the best friend anybody could have. Notice how he didn’t focus on the miles … it was more of why pay for something you can do for free. That’s why he toted around a red, 4-person canoe with him everywhere he went and was always ready for an adventure, I guess as long as it was free.

So, today it was just me and TJ. Me on bass, guitar, and drums and then TJ on bass, guitar, and drums. We played some of the 80s rock we all grew up on, but eventually cranked up the 90s Grunge with Nirvana and Pop Punk with 90s and 00s Green Day. It was just the two of us and we are the most fond of this genre so there was no worrying about my wife wondering, “When will this end?” Oh yeah, notice how I just mention guitar, bass, drums — no vocal. That’s not our strong suit.

Life lesson #96 – Remembering a loved one is healthy for healing. Do it often and do it with others.

And to warm-up for holding a 20+ pound, 1970s Strat, I got 4.42 miles in at a 9:07 / mile clip. All ready to jam now!

Morning weight = 172.5. Post-run weight = 170.

Pre-Run Nutrition and Hydration:

Herbalife24 Prepare and a medium banana 30 minutes before my run. If you are one of those that think just water will do it, I dare you to try a preparation drink. All you need to know is that you will go longer … Period!

Day 95. It’s a Two-Towel Day

Been doing a lot of road miles, but no gym time. Calorie burning without mass building. I refuse to buy medium t-shirts! Guys, you know what I’m talking about here. No guy wants to be known as the incredible shrinking man, but that’s what is happening. All cardio and no weight lifting is definitely a great way to burn fat, but I also want to build muscle.

With physical therapy in the rear view mirror, it’s time to revisit my old friend Joe Weider and hit some weights.

In preparation for the gym, I approached it like a typical day of exercise and loaded up on my Herbalife24  Prepare, Herbalife Prolong, and Herbalife Niteworks. This should be on every nutritional bartenders “know-list” — tastes so good and oh yeah, helps sustain the necessary energy I need not just for a pure cardio burn, but also a bulk and define session.

Ended the day with a 4-ounce glass of water and Herbalife24 Restore.

Herbalife Sustain and Recovery Cocktail Recipe

The ingredients:

  • 1/2 scoop of Herbalife24 Prepare
  • 1/2 scoop of Herbalife24 Prolong
  • 1/2 scoop of Herbalife Niteworks

The directions:

  • It’s easy to make … just drink about 2 ounces out of a 16 ounce water bottle. The regular old water bottles we all have and plan to recycle.
  • With a funnel (make sure the bottom of the funnel doesn’t get wet and touch the top of the water line — you’ll never be able to pour anything in there). Start to pour the ingredients.
  • Between each ingredient pour, you may need to shake to create more space for the next pour.

The results:

  • Energy. I feel energized and refreshed. Imagine the cool morning air of a Lake Tahoe morning. Smog-free and clean. That’s how I feel … smog-free.
  • Sustained Energy. No noticeable drop-off during the workout which is important to prevent injury. This is increasingly important for those of us that do not rest between sets — just move on to the next body part.
  • Recovery. Quick recovery post workout. Since I do supersets with no rest, I get to a 2-towel sweat. This cocktail helps me get my breathing back to normal and relaxed.

Life lesson #95 — Be the bartender of your life and mix up delicious and refreshing positive change.

Day 94. Run Early. Run Often.

Early rising means it’s darker and darker in the morning. Here’s a tip for a 7am run. I’ve been doing this for my last 5 runs and I can feel the difference in my endurance and it just feels better to have the remainder of the day to celebrate your early morning accomplishments.

  • 6:15 – 6:20am – Wake up and immediately take a bite of a banana and drink a high carb drink. I’m using Herbalife24 Prepare. I’ve also started to add Herbalife Niteworks. It’s only been 2 runs with this new concoction, but I feel I’m breathing better, cleaner, and more efficient. But again, that could be the 60-degree weather. In any event, I really like the taste of this Pre-Run Cocktail.
  • By 6:45am – finish your 8 ounce carb cocktail and banana. I usually leave one bite for when I get home.
  • Off you go!

Life lesson #94 – Darker and colder means more discipline. Accept the change and make a plan. It’s amazing what just putting on a jacket of acceptance can do for your mentality.

MyFitnessPal 09-11-2013 Summary

Today’s Activities:

  • 3 x 1.5 mile fast. Which in human terms, means 1 mile slow, 1.50 miles fast, 2 minutes slow and repeat. Then 1 mile slow. The good news … distances below 8 miles are nothing. Won’t go as far as a walk in the park because it takes effort, but I’m in the park vicinity at least. As long as the weather is cool, I am cool. The bad news … my iPhone is crashing. In fact, I didn’t know Mickey Mouse covered Nirvana and Green Day songs.
  • Googled “iPhone is playing too fast” and it offered some assistance. Here’s what happened. About mile 3, Voice Command activated. A few seconds later, Mickey Mouse was on my playlist and if you’ve never heard Mickey sing Very Ape (one of my favorite Nirvana tunes), you haven’t heard nothing. The new iPhone launch couldn’t have come at a better time! If you know how to fix this, I’m all ears (excuse the Mickey pun).

Day 93. Developing a Complex … a Core Complex

Started taking Herbalife Core Complex on Sunday, September 8, 2013.  Nice change from taking the handful of things I was previously taking. Now, it’s just 4 tablets in the morning that include Herbalifeline, CoQ10, and Neptune Krill Oil. I’m not even going to attempt to study up on Neptune Krill Oil, but I figure it sounds very official plus the box says endorsed by a Nobel Laureate. Who am I to question the research?

After two days, I can tell you this. Wait for it … I can’t feel anything. But am I surprised? Of course not. I am happy to go from a handful of morning supplements to a tiny hiccup of supplements. The Core Complex has two additional supplements you put aside for the evening which is going to help me save money on my Nature Made B12 I was purchasing separately. The two additional include my B vitamins.

CORE COMPLEX – THE Verdict:

It’s two (pun intended) early to say, but it does appear I will get my B vitamins most vegetarians lack and I no longer have a mouthful of morning sups to contend with.

Why I’m taking it? I jokingly said earlier I’m taking the product because of a fancy label. Truth is, my body is taking a pounding from the pavement. I don’t have swelling on my knees, but I do feel twinges and sharp pains on occasion. Plus, my road mileage is increasing so I want an insurance policy for my heart. All these items are designed for a happy, healthy heart and that is the goal. I know the strain I’m putting on my body and want to give it the proper nutrients to keep on going.

Life lesson #93 – Listen to you body. Minor aches and pains from normal activity is something. Recurring aches and pains from abnormal activity is something else.

Day 92. Don’t Be That Guy

Are you “I Hate Monday” guy? If I can offer any advice, don’t be that guy. It’s not a characteristic that empowers you or a trait that shows gratitude. If you find yourself saying, “I Hate Mondays,” stop and find something you’re grateful for. Do this over and over until you develop a habit and trust me, it won’t take a 90-day plan to develop this attitude of gratitude.

Life lesson #92 – There is always someone that has it worse than you. If you hate Monday’s because you have to go back to the “grind” imagine the opposite emotion if you didn’t have that job. There are hundreds of thousands of people that wish they could be sitting in your place.

Chinese Proverb (unknown author) – I once met a guy who complained he had no shoes until he met a guy who had no feet. Perspective people!

Day 91. Fruits of the Spirit

Church potluck … how cliche is that? And by cliche, I mean cool. Getting together with like-minded people that don’t seek religion, but seek an authentic relationship with God makes the angels sing. Unfortunately, our like-minded belief system doesn’t extend to our food choices. It became perfectly clear that my wife and I are certainly in the minority. But happily, our church even welcomes vegetarian Christians.

Life lesson #91 – Surround yourself with people full of the fruits of the spirit. (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfullness, Gentleness (or Humbleness), and Self-Control. Maybe some of these characteristics can rub off on you.

I needed some of that patience this afternoon as the luncheon/meeting ran a little longer than expected. I found myself wanting to ask “Can someone put the game on?” but I settled on a quick wander to my fantasy football App to check the scores. The first official Sunday of the NFL season! Just another thing to be grateful for.

Morning weight = 172.5

Today’s Meals:

  • 8:15am – Herbalife Shake. Still using Vita Coco, but not by choice. Missing my low sugar apple juice. They only sell it one place and that one place is 6 cities away. Definitely time for a roadtrip soon, very soon!
  • 1:15pm – Church luncheon. Not quite what we normally eat, but I do have to say at least there are veggie options. Made a ghetto-style taco salad.
    • 3 ounces of tortilla chips
    • 1 cup of lettuce
    • 1/2 cup of S & W black beans
    • 3/8 cup of Sargento classic shredded cheese
    • 4 tbsp  of a green tomatillo sauce (forgot the bottle brand)
    • 1 black and white cookie (unknown origin)
  • 4:30pm – Kind Bar Plus – Almond Walnut Macadamia
  • 7:30pm – Trader Joe Dinner
    • Trader Joe’s Fettucini with mushrooms (doctored up by my wife)
    • Trader Joe’s Corn Tortilla flatbreads sesame seed (2 pieces)
    • Trader Joe’s Mini Brie Bites (2 pieces)

Today’s Activities:

  • Church and Football. Some people may get those confused, even thinking football is a spiritual thing. I love me some football, but I won’t get my priorities out-of-order … any more. At least when it comes to football and especially fantasy football.
  • By the way, in week in, my defense of last year’s title didn’t go so well. I scored big, but my opponent scored bigger. I just happened to go up against the two top QB performers this week. The Manning brothers combined for a total of 11 TDs — I’ll get him next time.

Day 90. Brake Fast! I’m Eating a Different Breakfast!

Three-months ago I started documenting the exciting world of what I eat, when I eat, what I do, and when I do it in preparation for my very first (and probably very last) marathon. Experts say … let’s stop at that statement. Have any of you actually met any of these experts? There are certainly a lot of them apparently walking around, but they are like Big Foots when you go looking for them. Anyway, experts drill 90-day plans into our heads.

Tony Horton – P “90” X. Shaun T’s Insanity might as well be called Insanity90X. Amazon even has a ton of books on the importance of a 90-day plan. I haven’t read any of them, but after 90 days of doing this, I can offer some insight.

Life lesson #90 – Anybody can do something for 1 day and learn a little. Do something for 90 days and learn a lot.

Food and Rest

Today’s Activities:

  • Thinking the best way to say this … oh yeah, chilled! Thanks to that “Fri-turday” activities, my wife and I had a staycation, getaway, or just a together break. So, in other words, chilled.

Saturday, 09-07-2013

Day 89. Fri-turday

Again with the planning. I know, there are some things I am a broken record, but it is worth saying again the importance to have a plan and work the plan. And part of that plan is to look ahead which means for me, I’m running 12 miles today and not tomorrow. Thus, Friday is Saturday or Fri-turday.

RUN TIP

I tore open a Vega Sport Endurance gel on my trek today. It may be able to tote the all-natural flag, but it also almost tore open the edges of my mouth a la The Joker knive. Why So Serious? Because it almost cut the sides of my mouth. The package is wider than the Clif Shots, but when you’re on mile 6-7, I didn’t stop to think, “is this going to fit in my mouth?” I just routinely did my routine. Tear, squeeze, and suck. Bad move.

And the taste … if you crave warm baby food, you found your product. The raspberry pouch I had tasted like a warm, and very sweet, very tart, apple sauce.

The Verdict … I’ll stick with my Clif Shots Chocolate!

Life lesson #89 – Know when you’re too old for baby food and snacks (ie – someone telling you what you want to hear versus what you need to hear). Never turn down a good meal (ie – sound advice or wise counsel) when someone offers it.

Morning weight = 171.5. Post run weight = 168

Today’s Meals:

  • 8:45am – Herbalife Shake.

Today’s Activities:

  • Great route! Explored a part of town I have yet to travel on. Actually did a quick, unexpected turn when I saw another runner going down a country road, hoping to follow him to the next hidden bike trail. Unfortunately, he eventually hid from me when he turned into a court and I assume went home. I ran around the area for awhile, even called out to a biker, “is there a bike trail entrance somewhere around here” to which he pointed, “keep going and it’s to the left.” I kept going for about 3/4 mile, but decided best to fight this “keep going” battle at a later date. I only had 3 more miles to reach today’s goal and if I turned around now, I’ll be right around there when I get home.
  • Got tired and walked somewhere around mile 10. The heat eventually got to me, but after about a 10 minute walk, I was back on the trail and finished miles 11 (9:29) and 12 (9:23) in great splits.

Day 88. Scaling Down

Feeling a bit like a 1-pound yo-yo. This week’s progress:

  • Monday, September 02, 2013. 170 lbs
  • Monday, September 02, 2013 after run. 168 lbs
  • Tuesday, September 03, 2013. 171.5 lbs
  • Wednesday, September 04, 2013. 172 lbs
  • Wednesday, September 04, 2013 after run 170
  • Thursday, September 05, 2013. 171

What I’m learning … weight loss can’t be solely measured by the scale. You need to be mindful of how your clothes fit. How your skin feels … for example, mine is feeling much tighter these days. And that tightness is either from a loss of overall body fat or it is the sun actually cooking my skin while I’m out on the road.

I say these things because if I started out the week at 170 and four days later I’m weighing in at 171, even after logging in 12.29 sidewalk miles, it could be discouraging. So, if you stumble upon this particular entry today, tomorrow, or years from now, and have been scale-discouraged, take heart and take measurement. You may need to tighten your belt and didn’t even realize.

Life lesson #88 – The scale doesn’t measure all your efforts. Sometimes, you need the eyeball test!

Day 87. Same Distance, Different Results. Why?

Getting up earlier and earlier these days means it’s getting darker and darker in the morning. Don’t get me wrong … I’m not strapping on the ole’ miner’s hat and heading to the man-made elevator. I’m just saying I know Summer is officially over and Fall is officially here.

That Fall weather doesn’t keep for the entire day so morning runs are the best option for now. My advice … run in the early morning. You’ll feel stronger and more powerful versus attempting any physical activity after eating a typical breakfast, atypical lunch, and an outrageous dinner. I’m sure there’s science behind it, but I’m talking real-world experience.

Life lesson #87 – Seasons change and we need to change along with them. Don’t get caught wearing a parka in the dead of Summer, that’s all I’m saying.

Morning weight 172. Post run weight 170.
